![]() ![]() I feel these are some of the most unjust of all the accusations levied against her, for Bubblegum is one of the most self-sacrificing of all the characters in Adventure Time. Bubblegum is often accosted for being uncaring, capricious, cold and aloof. Probably the most vicious attacks are those levied against her character. The real question is can learn to find a balance between science and trust in Finn and her friends to help rather than relying on increasingly dangerous experiments I believe the show is headed in that direction and a final confrontation between what Bubblegum trusts more science or her friends will soon come. None of the creations that she has produced, disastrously or not, have been made with any intended malice, but rather with the desire to improve the lives of the candy people (the de-corpseinator in episode 1 or Goliad). Science can and has been wielded to amazing feats, Bubblegum has (presumably) used it to create life and protect it, its proven itself a valuable ally in a dangerous world. PB’s obsession with science to the point of almost Victor Frankenstein levels and her repeated denial of the existence of magic most likely stems from her indefatigable desire to control everything to protect those around her, the idea of something like magic with all its unpredictability is a terrifying thought for bubblegum. The real test of her character will come when the candy kingdom no longer requires her protection, whether she can give up her power will be the true litmus test. Whether its morally right or wrong, it works, and bubblegum has by herself built the only (known) humane civilisation left on planet earth, she is a Napoleon, a kind, loving and enlightened leader who has brought law and order to a chaotic world, but when power is concerned is a ruthless dictator. The fact is the candy people are dumb and helpless, I believe Human beings/candy people are naturally free and its against their nature to be ruled or led, but its clear that their freedom would directly endanger their existence. It can be argued that all early civilisations grew under the tyranny but also the protection of strong leaders who were able to unite people under their rule and possessed the intelligence or charisma to control people towards specific goals. The land of Ooo is a barbaric, monstrous place in which everyday for those without magical powers or sweet hero skills would be a constant life and death struggle outside the candy kingdom there is little civilisation and virtually none with laws, rules and the means to enforce and protect them. But I feel that some, though not all, attacks are unjustified and I wish to take them in turn. Bubblegum has taken flak for her totalitarian powers, fanatical devotion to science, occasional indifference and often dangerous creations that either backfire, are questionable, or both. Make no mistake the Candy Kingdom is a dictatorship (until we see some sign of inherited power it’s not a monarchy which anyway is little better), and princess Bubblegum is its supreme leader. There are no situations that can justify a dictatorship, but I think its safe to say the Land of Ooo may be an exceptional situation.
